UN to ask for help in Iraq – Iraqi people need food, medicine, clothing, and all the other things we take for granted. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is goingt to ask for up to 2 billion USD to help alleviate the suffering in Iraq. If we, as Americans, want to be consistent and honest about the motivations for invading Iraq, we should be the most generous in donating to the various Non-Governmental Organizations (Red Cross and others) which will assist in that region.

Well, since I don’t believe we should BE invading Iraq, I think I’ll not be visiting the Red Cross donation bin anytime real soon. As much as I feel for the Iraqi people, I don’t think giving them Americans’ hard earned cash is really going to solve anything. Unloading Saddam’s coffers to feed his subjugates, now that might work. Creating a system by which the “freed people” of Iraq derive income from the oil fields for a while, seems like more of a solution than Red Cross penny cans.
In the long term, Iraq can be self-sustaining and bring the poor and beaten people back to the level of affluence their neighbors enjoy. In the short term, I don’t see how they could do anything without outside support except become more xenophobix and Qaeda-bait.
