The Gender Genie claims to be able to identify the gender of an author with 80% accuracy. Based on 4 samples of my writing (both formal and informal pieces), I’d have to say it can identify my gender with 0% accuracy. I also pasted in a couple pieces from Buff’s Livejournal, and it got them wrong too. If it can’t even tell the bombastic prose of the self-proclaimed Thunder God is male, I doubt its accuracy in any situation.
Well, it correctly identified my gender….but get this…in the piece I submitted, it picked up on all these keywords to identify me…but not one of them were the words in the piece I most felt gave me away….like “mommy”, “my daughter” or “her mother”. Interesting, no?
It seems to think using first person pronouns are indicators of femaleness, as are negative statements. Maleness is embodied in articles, or some such. Very simpleminded.
According to the BookBlog folks, it was only accurate with some books they fed it 50% of the time, which is akin to guessing (unless we have more than 2 genders).
