A Reuters story, Marriott Giving Free Web, Though Not at Top Hotels, says Marriott is planning to give away WiFi access in their mid-range hotels, but still charge extra for it in the expensive hotels. This reminds me of the strangeness in telecom I noticed while traveling on business the past few years.

According to ABC News, the TSA is planning to reduce the number of Air Marshals on flights, in order to save money.

According to CNN, though, that’s not true at all. I wonder if it was true until someone leaked it to the press and then it became untrue. wink wink

Employers are handing out the smallest raises since the mid-70s. I’m sure that is no indication of any economic trouble we’re in as a country, though.

White Teacher Should Not Teach Black History

Quote from the article: “The message is that we are not concerned about the importance of your historical background.”

No, the message is that we are more concerned with not offending people with astoundingly thin skins (of whatever color) than we are of informing the students of historical events.

One source I’m using to help me focus my writing says there should be 24 scenes in a normal length story. I’ve got 60, is that enough?

Now to actually organize my thoughts and write more than just the two scenes I’ve got semi-completed…

Movie?

 25 Jul 2003 @ 12:02 PM

The return of The Friday Five, after a long bout of lameness…

  1. If your life were a movie, what would the title be? I’m Not Old, Dammit!
  2. What songs would be on the soundtrack? A lot of 80s schlock and modern techno-esque stuff
  3. Would it be a live-action film or animated? Why? Live-action, because I’m not a cartoon
  4. Casting: Who would play you, members of your family, friends, etc? I’m gonna have to go with Keanu Reeves, just because I can’t imagine a less expressive actor and it amuses me. Family? Friends? Don’t make me think too hard.
  5. Describe the movie preview/trailer. Lots of hyperactive colors, cut-scenes of speeding cars and random flashes of military bases and three-legged dogs.

SS

Can you believe that this image got the cartoonist a visit from the Secret Service? What’s especially ironic is how intensely conservative the cartoonist is. He intended this homage to Vietnam War journalism to indict the media frenzy for turning this into an anti-Bush thing. (Not saying which side of the fence I fall on, since it’s irrelevant to this subject.)

I can’t believe I agree with Michael Jackson on something.

There apprently is a bill in the House that would make it a federal felony to download copyrighted music off the internet. So, is it a federal felony to steal a CD from the store? Didn’t think so.

Naked ‘Bambi’ hunts spur outrage

It’s not illegal to hunt nekkid chicks who volunteer to run around the desert waiting to be hit with paintballs. The women are paid more money if they avoid getting hit, so they have kind of a double incentive to be difficult targets.

Cafepress will soon let you publish books for free (free to the author). This is in contrast to other print-on-demand services such as Xlibris, which costs at least $500 to have your trade paperback or ebook published.

According to CNN, Rosarito horses wear diapers. Um, yeah. Gringo, any chance of getting a photo of this phenomenon?

Apparently Rosarito has grown insanely since they filmed Titanic there. I remember a sleepy little town with a few restaurants and a lot of empty beach. Now, they seem to have so many horses the sea is filling with manure. Yummy.

I was talking with someone at work today and discussed news. In particular, the change at work from CNN Headline News as the default channel in the breakroom two years ago contrasted with the default now of Fox News. I have a hard time not calling Fox News Faux News, considering how blatantly slanted their news is. My coworker mentioned the liberal bias of CNN, which I can certainly agree with. However, CNN Headline News doesn’t have the time to be blatantly biased, with their 30 minute recycle rate.
