The boy and I went to see the new Looney Tunes movie today. We were both amused. I suspect I appreciated more than he the surfeit of shots focused tightly on Jenna Elfman’s tight buns and long legs. She spent the vast majority of the movie in miniskirts and shorts. I guess that’s how they got the PG rating.

As for the rest of the movie (yes I did notice other things), it was pretty funny and goofy. It’s pretty much what you would expect from a Looney Tunes live action movie, but with a stupendous number of inside jokes. Ralph is hanging out with the sheep and wolf, the frog sings, “Hello my baby” and so on. At four, Alex laughed at many places, but I laughed at many more. I think it’s safe to assume the movie was written for folks who are adults but remember the 90 minutes every Saturday spent watching Wile E. Coyote blowing himself up with shoddy Acme products. And for the women, Brendan Fraser flexes a lot.

Houses

Why would one take beautiful hardwood floors and cover them with shag carpeting? What in the world were people thinking in the 70s? And don’t get me started on multi-colored confetti-like carpet colors. Ick.

Good stuff today:

* Calzones turned out good, and the garlic/cheese breadsticks were ok.
* My computer didn’t reboot spontaneously all night.
* All my homework is caught up.
* My midterms have come back and I rock.

Bad stuff today:

* Forgot to take the svoulaki to work, so was forced to resort to a Butterfinger bar for lunch.
* Computer reboots still not solved.
* The new school week begins tomorrow, with more homework.
* I’m out of Ben & Jerry’s.

Seriously, those calzones were yummy. Someone did complain that it needed more cheese, but there was quite literally no more room in the shell. And it was over half cheese anyhow (parmagianno regianno, mozarella, and ricotta).

School

 30 Aug 2003 @ 10:27 AM

The Friday Five is all about Back to School.

  1. Are you going to school this year? Yep.
  2. If yes, where are you going (high school, college, etc)? If no, when did you graduate? I graduated High School in 1988, but I’m a junior in college now. Sad, eh?
  3. What are/were your favorite school subjects? Math, sciences.
  4. What are/were your least favorite subjects? Anything liberal arts. This semester, I’m thinking “ethics” is gonna suck ass.
  5. Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite? There was a teacher in high school that let me get away with murder, so that was cool. But, my favorite would have been Mr. H (long German name escapes me) from 7th and 8th grade. He’s my favorite because he gave me high-energy electrical things to play with. How many 13 year olds get to build a Jacob’s Ladder?

This is something I didn’t know existed before. You can view the latest posts to all of LiveJournal in one place. Two things struck me: I know a lot of the old hands, and they seem to post an awful lot, but none of them were shown when I glanced at the feed; second, there’s a lot of Russian folks on LJ.

Oh, and there is an RSS version as well. Gotta love RSS…

Hypothetically, say you build a web page as a quick one-off. When you look at it and test it every which way, it works just fine. When others look at it, many of them tell you it doesn’t work completely and even tell you specifically what is broken and why.

Do you:
a. Believe that 5 different people getting the same result are a statistically valid sample and change your page to be bulletproof, or
b. Assume that since you can see it, everyone else is a fucking moron and begin to insult them for trying to help you fix your page.

Just thinking. Hypothetically.

One source I’m using to help me focus my writing says there should be 24 scenes in a normal length story. I’ve got 60, is that enough?

Now to actually organize my thoughts and write more than just the two scenes I’ve got semi-completed…

Alex was at the sink last night, after brushing teefies, and wanted to look in the mirror for some ineffable reason. So he stood up real tall on his tiptoes and looked in the mirror. This may seem like a rather silly thing to notice, but he needed help to see the mirror just two months ago. I look at him and he’s a little boy, not a little toddler. When did that happen?

Does anyone know where I might find Duralex glassware? My tempered glasses from Pier One are starting to chip and shatter, which is pathetic. We had Duralex glasses when I was young, and I know they’re some sort of fixture in European homes, but where can I buy them online or in the States.

Cafepress has been told I’m violating the copyrights of Albert Korda with an image of Che Guevara I was using on some products that nobody ever bought. Apparently Señor Korda’s estate is more interested in his intellectual property than he ever was. There are many concepts involved in this case, and I’ll lay them out for you.

  • Korda said specifically that he wanted people to copy and spread the image of Che Guevara, as seen in this quote:

I am not averse to its reproduction by those who wish to propagate his [Guevara’s] memory and the cause of social justice throughout the world,” Korda said in the autumn of 2000.

  • The concept of benign neglect reigns. If someone does not attempt to defend their copyright, even in the face of many highly public uses of it, the right to defend it is hard to manage. Consider how many times you’ve seen the Che Guevara image on posters, t-shirts, etc.
  • The Berne copyright convention is the means for reciprocity between countries and their varying internal copyright laws. Cuba has never signed the Berne convention, because Castro said it was a tool of the capitalists. Korda lived until his death in 2001 in Cuba, and was a proud Cuban citizen.
  • The image I used was not the photograph of Che that Korda took, but a stylized rendering of that image. It is a unique work. To claim that any image of Guevara infringes on Korda’s copyright implies that Guevara’s likeness is ownable and, further, that it is owned by the estate of Señor Korda.

Of course, none of this matters, because the store has been removed and it never made money anyway. Just another example of lawyers bullying people into doing things that aren’t right, merely expedient.

I’ve gotten to the point in my life where I don’t need nor desire any drama in my existence. If we all write our own stories as we live and grow, my story will hopefully involve long slow days of riding bikes with the boy and writing tales nobody ever reads, watching movies and listening to lots of esoteric music. My story, hopefully, will not be something to be made into an after-school special or Sunday night movie.

In other words, and let me be completely clear here:
I don’t wish to be involved in anyone’s drama. I am not part of anyone else’s relationship and do not wish to be.

In other news, I’d like to make it publicly known that userinfoursulasgirl and I have never had sex. Just to clear up anyone’s concerns there. Sorry, never happened and seems exceptionally unlikely to ever happen.

To sum up… Everyone just grow up and if you can’t say anything nice shut the fuck up.

I’m wondering if this happens to anyone else, or if it’s just me. I know pretty much everyone experiences deja vu on occasion. The source of these feelings is not understood, but I like one explanation in particular: your mind has a kind of electrical storm that causes an experience to pause before being processed. This causes you to experience the same thing after it’s already happened, so you feel like it’s doubled, although you cannot pinpoint when you thought it had happened in the past.

Now, my particular variant doesn’t fit that theory very well.
