I can’t believe I agree with Michael Jackson on something.

There apprently is a bill in the House that would make it a federal felony to download copyrighted music off the internet. So, is it a federal felony to steal a CD from the store? Didn’t think so.

Cafepress will soon let you publish books for free (free to the author). This is in contrast to other print-on-demand services such as Xlibris, which costs at least $500 to have your trade paperback or ebook published.

If anyone out there in geekland can help me with an XP problem, I’d be much obliged.

Sometime after installing the latest patches, IE has decided to stop running Javascript at all. No amount of fiddling with security settings has produced any change. Unlike previous versions of Windows, though, I can’t just forcefeed a new IE setup by re-installing IE 6, because the installer claims I’ve got a newer version already installed. You can’t roll back to an earlier version of IE, because it’s the only version ever installed on the machine.

So, what DLL do I need to mess with, where must it be, and what Registry Hack must I perform?

Thanks for any help.

Cafepress has sent me another IP violation notice, this one even more specious than the last.

Apparently some company has trademarked the phrase “spoiled brat.” Go figure.

I often make jokes about my first computer (Commodore VIC-20) having less memory than my watch. I’m not sure about that, although my current geek watch likely has more than 3 kilobytes of RAM. But, now we have the LAKS Memory Watch, a standard watch with up to 256 megabytes of memory with an integrated USB cable. Wonder if that would be verböten in the SCIF…

So I’m using a Peer to Peer file sharing client (rhymes with huzaa) and I notice a lot of people downloading the movie trailers I’ve got in my “videos – not movies” directory. Um, who is so quickwitted that they thought a 4-meg file was the movie “Jungle Book 2”? Seriously, folks, a full movie has to be hundreds of megs.

When I run my site through the W3 Validator, I get an error I’ve never seen before.

document type does not allow element “hr” here; missing one of “object”, “applet”, “map”, “iframe”, “button”, “ins”, “del” start-tag

So, I can’t put a horizontal rule anywhere except inside one of those tags? I absolutely never use those tags. Obviously the page renders acceptably, but why is there an error? XHTML geeks?

For that matter, why do I get an error on those HR tags, but not on others?

I got it. Turns out the editor for Movable Type automagically puts in some line breaks and paragraph marks that confused the validator. You can’t put an HR tag in a paragraph. 🙂

The author of the recently escaped WASTE is quitting AOL over it.

I guess we all saw it coming. Either AOL was gonna get tired of his shenanigans or he’d get tired of the games. Oh, well. I’m sure he’ll find other interesting things to do.

Ya know, people often say to me, “If you make a design with such-and-such on it, I would definitely buy it and so would x other people.” And then I go to the effort to make these designs and how many people buy them? None? Maybe one, in some cases.

Why bother?

If I don’t get a bunch of sales on my store, Cafepress says they’ll steal my commissions! C’mon, people, help me out here!

Or not, and I’ll use the accrued commission to buy myself a t-shirt or something.

Following up my previous post wondering why CSS is harder to make behave than a table…

Anyway, I just decided to fake it by moving the archive listing to its own page, making the right-hand column incredibly shorter. Odds are, if I have even one post now it won’t get wacky on me. And if it does, maybe it’s telling me I should write more.

Update: With the assistance of the inestimable Gringo, I think maybe it’s working now. Of course, if I don’t shut up for a while, I’ll never know. 🙂

Thanks, Dave. Looks like a good fix. Damned floats…

Just to prove my geekiness, I now have Acrobat Reader on my Clie, and I’ve put the PDF version of Atlas Shrugged on it. It makes that book much more portable. Too bad I can’t take my Clie to work any more – I need something to keep me awake there.

Anyone out there with enough CSS savvy to explain why my main page looks like crap if I don’t have a lot of entries in my weblog? If the links column is longer than the content column, the links ease into the left side. I’ve tried playing with the “height:100%” style, but that only seems to work in IE6. In Netscape/Mozilla and Opera it’s broken. I’m sure the browsers aren’t broken, but why does the code not work quite right? I’m not going to use tables like 1996 to align my page content…

Help? Anyone?

SCO says, We own Unix!

Do Too!

And so it goes…

In response to my musing about what Raymond and Stallman think, Eric Raymond has posted some interesting reading.

Whoever ordered from the Spoiled Brat store, thanks. I was beginning to think nobody remembered that it was there. Of course, the Che Guevara store is gone now, but I have others. Just go to my store to see the options.

Yet again, some company (Disney) is trying to replicate the “success” of the ill-fated Divx DVD self-destruct format that Circuit City tried years ago. They never learn.
