The fake documents that Secretary Powell presented to the U.N. in February have not been getting much airplay. Wonder why?

You know what’s funny about all this? When they had that whole committee hearing broadcast on TV, when Powell presented all his evidence, I came away from it feeling like he hadn’t presented anything compelling. I felt like the whole bundle was a pretty weak excuse for war. It’s all vague comments on dubious phone calls, satellite photos of some lumps which COULD be mobile weapons labs, photos of some trucks at a depot, and all those documents. With many of those documents turning out to be fakes, I feel now as though my trepidation over the “evidence” may have been justified.
I was pretty astounded that Powell and Tenet were willing to give up so many sources of intelligence (which is amazingly fragile). I thought, “If they’re willing to tell the world these highly classified things, they must be convinced.” And, honestly, Powell strikes me as the lone voice of reason in the current administration, so if he’s the frontman I am more likely to believe. I’d like to believe that he was duped by Tenet and friends, but if so he is a lot more credulous than I would expect from one in his position.
