There’s a great deal of scientific information in this interview, but it’s interesting enough even for laymen to read, I think. The basic story is that fructose and sucrose are not the kinds of sugars we evolved to consume in large quantities, so they mess up our body chemistry and make us pigs. The good doctor even demonizes orange juice (any kind, including organic fresh-squeezed).

Good news, though – eating oranges is good for you. Some of this is sort of common sense, if you think about how we ate 20,000 years ago compared to now. Our bodies haven’t changed in that time, but our diets have changed vastly. Nobody drank orange juice before industrialization; they ate oranges. Nobody drank sodas; they drank water. So, those people who decry processed foods, here’s another data point to use in your quest to return to a diet better designed for our natural metabolisms.

Yeah, it’s hard to find fruit juices that aren’t bad for you. I can usually find apple juice that has no added sugar, but everything else is hard, unless you head to the specialty markets, and then it cost a fortune for organic orange juice!

  2. Gary says:

The point isn’t that “no sugar added” juice is good, it’s that no juice is good. Since the juice has none of the fiber of the fruit that it’s squeezed from, the fructose isn’t being countered by the fiber. So, whole fruit and a glass of water is better than a glass of the purest fresh-squeezed organic juice.

Or that’s the theory he’s working with.

Ok, so is that really pulpy gross OJ good for you? What if you stir in some Metamucil?

  4. lysa says:

How about if you have a glass of juice with a piece of high fiber wheat toast?

  5. Diane says:

No jam on the toast may help, but remember 1 glass of juice equals 6 oranges – so I guess you would need to eat 6 pieces of high fiber wheat toast. If you could.

  6. lysa says:

6 pieces is a bit much. There’s always that new “flavorless” Benefiber. Add that to the orange juice!
