And drum even.

  1. What size shoe do you wear? 8 1/2 or 9
  2. How many pairs of shoes do you own? 5
  3. What type of shoe do you prefer (boots, sneakers, etc.)? Sneakers
  4. Describe your favorite pair of shoes. Why are they your favorite? These ones, because they are very comfortable, durable, and they’re so unusual I annoy boring people by wearing them.
  5. What’s the most you’ve spent on one pair of shoes? I think combat boots were 80 bucks, and the blue shoes listed above were 75.

Thus ends another edition of the Friday Five. Have a good weekend.

I’ve long given up on ever finding MTV playing music (wonder what the M stands for), but at least VH1 would play a good 1 or 2 hours of videos during their 24 hour day. Not any longer. They’ve replaced many of their usual music blocks with reruns of the Adam West version of Batman, and the Brady Bunch, and other crap TV from the late 60s and early 70s. This stuff was dreck in 1975, it’s dreck now. And, what is the relationship between these shows and a channel ostensibly devoted to playing Video Hits? I realize that their “Rerun Show” was a hit, but that doesn’t mean they need to replace the music with real reruns. Who is in charge of the logic behind cable programming?

Up next, the Home and Garden channel will play Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Animal Planet will play NASCAR races. Why let the viewers expect to find something on your station at all related to the name of the channel, anyway?

  1. What are your favorite ways to relax and unwind? Read, play simplistic video games.
  2. What do you do the moment you get home from work? Look at the answering machine, hit CTRL-E to download email.
  3. What are your favorite aromatherapeutic smells? NONE of them.
  4. Do you feel more relaxed with a group of friends or hanging out by yourself? Alone, more often than not.
  5. What is something that you feel is relaxing but most people don’t? Can’t think of anything. Some people don’t find making graphics relaxing, but they don’t count.

What is up with question #3? That doesn’t fit at all!

  1. Would you say you’re good at keeping in touch with people? Not particularly.
  2. Which communication method do you usually prefer/use: email, phone, snail mail, weblog comments, personal meetings? Why? Email or LJ comments, cuz it doesn’t require stamps nor synchronizing schedules.
  3. Do you have an instant messenger program? How many? Why or why not? How often do you use it? Yes, all of them plus Trillian. Because friends use AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, and MSN. OK, almost nobody uses MSN because it sucks ass, but my family uses it. Pretty much daily use.
  4. Do most of your close friends live nearby or far away? Opposite ends of the continent.
  5. Are you an “out of sight out of mind” person or do you believe that “absence makes the heart grow fonder?” Generally the first, but some people won’t leave my heart no matter what.

Not a bad set of questions today, if more than five listed anyhow.

Cary Tennis has lots of folks writing him letters this week. A few highlights so far:

Avoid musicians and artists at all costs unless it’s solely a one-night stand.

I fell in love with someone who balances me and makes me happy, not someone that sets me afire because I know that kind of passion is part delusion and always temporary.

Stop calling severe psychological disorders “charming personality quirks.”

If you are a 45-year-old woman and you are dressing like Shakira in public and it is not Halloween, please stop.

Divorce – Parents longing for the freedom of their youth came and left like so many callers at a child’s wake. Some talked to my friends about it, some didn’t. None stayed for very long. All claimed needing to “experience life.” The effects are still being shown to this day — all of my friends either stay in relationships no matter what the cost or leave them no matter what the benefits.

To youth today, everything is a bloody drama.

From Smattering.

  1. What was your favorite subject in school? Why? Math, because it made sense.
  2. Who was your favorite teacher? Why? Mr. H, whose full name escapes me. He gave me a box of electronics and said, “See what you can make of this” in 7th grade.
  3. What is your favorite memory of school? In 7th grade, winning a blue ribbon in science fair (for that box of electronics that became a Jacob’s Ladder and Tesla Coil) and a blue ribbon in an art competition (for a sketch of an elephant).
  4. What was your favorite recess game? Can’t think of any besides four-square.
  5. What did you hate most about school? Being invisible to the “cool kids.”

Post yours in your own journal. Questions come up every week at Friday Five

  1. What is your biggest pet peeve? Why? Stupid people. Not just the ones that are dumb, more the people who refuse to remember anything or learn anything new. Why? Because they make me want to kill.
  2. What irritating habits do you have? I’m sure the peanut gallery will have something to add, but let’s see:
    • I am paranoid about being late to the point of showing up everywhere at least 15 minutes early.
    • Things go in specific places. That is a rule. Food and utensils may not share cupboard space. Hot pads go back on the hooks on the wall.
    • I have been told that I can be a tad arrogant, but that’s only because I’m better than you.
  3. Have you tried to change the habits, or just let them be? I don’t show up 30 minutes early, but otherwise this is it.
  4. What grosses you out more than anything else? Why? I think I’m remarkably un-gross-able.
  5. What one thing can you never see yourself doing that other people do? Avoiding computers or books. 🙂

C’mon, smartasses, jump in!

The Friday Five makes a triumphant return!

  1. What’s your favorite piece of clothing you currently own? Funky blue shoes
  2. What piece of clothing do you most want to acquire? What am I a girl?
  3. What piece of clothing can you not bring yourself to get rid of? Why? Class As, because they’re part of my personal history
  4. What piece of clothing do you look your best in? Perhaps someone else should answer that
  5. What has been your biggest fashion accident? Um, white socks with black shoes, maybe? Who freakin’ cares?

The Friday Five this week is brought to you by the word lame and the number zero. I guess they ran out of ideas or something…

Backdated from the 23d. Must have been busy that day.

  1. What is your current occupation? Is this what you chose to be doing at this point in your life? Why or why not? Defense contractor. No. Rather be a computer geek, but they all want degrees now. PHBT!
  2. If time/talent/money were no object, what would your dream occupation be? I suppose beachcomber is not an occupation?
  3. What did/do your parents do for a living? Has this had any influence on your career choices? 80 different blue-collar jobs. No.
  4. Have you ever had to choose between having a career and having a family? No
  5. In your opinion, what is the easiest job in the world? What is the hardest? Why? Coroner – surgery on dead people. Bank teller in Alaska – everyone is wearing ski masks!

After making userpics from the trailer, I had to go see the movie, right? Not really – I have no desire to watch “A Walk to Remember” for example. However, this movie was exactly as I expected: silly but fun. It was cotton candy and rollercoasters, not Bach and Ravel. But, still fun.

Back from DC, ready for the 10 days before I go back to the Coast again…

  1. Do you have a car? What kind? Yes, 1995 Ford Contour. The crappy one.
  2. Do you drive often? Well, I have to get to work somehow.
  3. What’s your dream car? 1967 Corvette Stingray. Black, with chrome trim.
  4. Have you ever gotten a ticket? Yes, but not since 1994.
  5. Have you ever been in an accident? Yep. Some moron rear-ended me at a red light. I had an old piece of crap Mazda, and it dented the previously-dented bumper. The moron ended up with a puddle of antifreeze under the mangled front-end of his car. Gotta love morons.

I’m tired. Can I go lay down now?

Hey, I wasn’t really near a computer most of Friday. 🙂

  1. What is your lineage and where are your ancestors from? Fuck if I know for sure, but the name came from Britain and my mom’s side came from Poland, Norway and Germany.
  2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit? If I could only choose one, UK.
  3. Which would you least like to visit? I think I could do without Poland.
  4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage? After 360+ years in North America, my family heritage is being a U.S. citizen.
  5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country? I’m still researching precisely, but it was in 1640 or 1643.

Total American mutt heritage. One of my aunts claims we’ve got a lot of freaky stuff hiding in the woodpile, including some Native American and black relatives back through the ages. I’m reasonably sure that no Bunker had slaves, though, since we settled in New England as poor people to begin with.
