Starting with GeoCities (Silicon Valley neighborhood, of course), I have had a constant internet presence since 1998. I only bought my domain name in the summer of 1999, but I’m going to claim my GeoCities time as part of the AndySocial.com timeline. There are very few websites that have stuck around as long as mine. Every year when the anniversary pops up, I think about updating more frequently. In the early days of the BunkBlog, I updated on average once a month (very clumpy, but that’s the way of averages). Now, I am lucky to update more than twice a year. There are a few reasons for this change.
First, we didn’t have real social media sites in 1998. I remember most interactions being via either comment sections or ICQ. Now, it’s Facebook. Yeah yeah – and BlueSky, and Mastodon, and Friendica, and Threads… It’s exhausting really. But, the engagement on Facebook et al completely overwhelms the infinitesimal amount of interaction on my actual site. John Scalzi’s blog is older than mine by a couple months, but he treats it like a job which is why it gets a lot of comments.
Second, I can’t get to my web site from work. If I have some thought, I have to make time to send an email to myself and then update the site when I get home.
Third, I have a hard time coming up with topics that I think deserve more than an ephemeral post on social media. I really should treat my site as the main location and everything else subsidiary, but see “can’t get to it from work” above.
Anyway, I won’t promise to post here more often. But, at least it’s federated now so you can subscribe via any ActivityPub site (Mastodon, Friendica, etc.).
