The WSJ has an article about a US Army Major who has been relieved of duty for not following orders. This is a toughy…

As a vet, I know how important it is to follow orders, unless they are illegal. Illegal orders, for those who don’t have a military background, are those which would violate the Geneva Convention, the Hague Convention, or are otherwise really really fucked up and evil.

So, this officer was told to shut down the Mosul TV station, as it was beginning to broadcast al-Jazeera. Al-Jazeera is a relatively balanced Arabic station, and has broadcast much anti-Taliban as well as anti-US stuff over the years. The major refused to shut down the station, believing that to chill Free Speech rights in a newly liberated country was in the fucked up and evil category.

So she was fired and someone else shut down the station. So much for standing up for what you believe is right.

Naturally, there is no comment from the gubmint about this issue, and none of the big broadcast news channels in the States are talking about it. Don’t rock the boat.
